May Love in Action Bin Collection
In preparation for our Service in September projects (on Sunday, September 10), we will be collecting travel size toiletry items, disposable razors, and men’s crew socks to fill care packages for Samaritan Patrol. We will collect these items throughout the month of May. Please bring them to church and place them in the Love in Action Bins by the church office, in Friendship Hall, or in the Atrium by May 28.

Robert Gammon Sabbatical
During the month of May, I will be away from the church observing a time of sabbatical. I am so thankful for this opportunity that Broadway offers to ministers every five years. During my sabbatical, I will take time for rest, travel, and to observe other musicians and churches along the way. I look forward to returning to Broadway in June as we host the Jubilate summer tour here at BBC on June 7.
Resignation Letter — Matthew Thompson
Dear Broadway Baptist Church,
Almost four years ago, I started working as a temporary hire for Broadway, not really knowing how long I would be staying, or what would be coming next. I settled in and started to help where I saw a need and kept going. Through the years, Broadway has supported my family in numerous ways — as expressed by Emily and myself in the last newsletter. We felt God had placed us both in positions where we could be surrounded by love and support through situations we could not have imagined.
At the same time, over these years, Broadway has also supported me as I kept moving forward, continuing to better myself and my skillset. Throughout, I have been self-studying toward a career in Software Development. As of Friday, March 31, I was offered and accepted a new position as a Junior Software Developer at El Toro (Internet Targeting Company) here in Louisville. My last day at Broadway will be Friday, April 14. With your encouragement, I am excited to start down this new path and see what adventures lie ahead.
I cannot thank Broadway enough for everything and everyone I have come to know in this time. My hope is that these relationships continue and I will be praying for each of you as an extension of my church family.
Thank you.
All the best,
Matt Thompson

Thank You Note - Cannan Hyde
A sincere thank you to Broadway members for continuing to remember mother (Helen Graves). She treasures each message she receives from you.
Mother lived with us for eight months, then following another small stroke, we placed her in a nearby nursing home. She has adjusted well and is very happy here in Black Mountain. She will be 103 in May!
Thanks again for your love and support of her through the years.
Sincerely,
~ Cannan Hyde
Thank You Note - Matt and Emily Thompson
Dear Broadway Baptist Congregation,
Emily and I would both like to thank all of you for your support over this past year. Through death, grief, cancer, and many unknowns, we have truly been humbled and blessed by Broadway, both through work and as a church family.
Thank you for all of your prayers, cards, food, and gifts, as it has helped us to keep moving forward and given us the means to support our own. I'm not sure how we would have made it without a loving church family.
Thank you,
~ Matthew and Emily Thompson
Thank You Note - Leona Montgomery
Dear Church Family,
Since July 2016, I have been on a journey that has tested my physical and spiritual well being. By the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the many prayers, cards, phone calls, flowers, and visits from this congregation, my journey has been blessed. Only the Lord knows how long my journey will continue.
I know that I do not walk alone. Our Lord is with us all. He has sent his army of Angels in the form of this congregation to help me walk this path. Thank you for walking this journey with me and reminding me of the power of love through Jesus Christ.

Broadway Beacon
Did you notice that Broadway’s newsletter now has a new title? Thanks to an anonymous submission, our newsletter is now called the Broadway Beacon. Not only does the alliteration have a nice ring, but a beacon is “an intentionally conspicuous device designed to attract attention.”
We design the Broadway newsletter in order to do just that – attract attention. Specifically your attention! We want you to know what is happening at Broadway and how you can be a part of what God is doing here.
We hope that the Broadway Beacon, and our other communication forums, provide you with the information you need to know, along with the stories of God’s love spread through the people and ministries of Broadway. And that is worth attracting attention – because Every Story Matters!
~ Emily Holladay
Sharing Blessings
A few weeks ago in worship, the congregation was invited to take a card to someone in the community. The card said, “Thank you for your work, Broadway Baptist Church.”
As part of our 2017 theme, “Prayer and Blessing,” we want to continue acts of blessing like this throughout the year! We will have more cards available at the church in the Atrium and Foyer. Please pick up a card (or another card) and share a blessing with someone!
Maybe you would like to thank a healthcare provider, a teacher, a police officer, a supermarket clerk, or someone else who offers a service in the community. Sometimes what seems like a small act can have a huge impact on others.
Let’s join together to share blessings in our community!
~ Susan Reed
Lenten Theme: Prayer and Blessing
Our Lenten theme this year is “Prayer and Blessing.” We seek to inspire and encourage one another along our Lenten journey as we reflect upon prayers of confession and forgiveness and blessings of grace and mercy.
The season of Lent is 40 days in length, not including Sundays (Sundays are days of celebration in the Christian church and thus are not counted). Lent is a time when we prepare for Easter by observing a period of confession, forgiveness, and spiritual discipline. The liturgical color for Lent is purple, which represents preparation and forgiveness. The purpose is to set aside time for reflection on Jesus Christ: his suffering and his sacrifice, his life and death, and ultimately his resurrection.
Lenten prayer booklets are available in the Atrium and Foyer for you to use during this season.
Spring Missions Sale Spotlight: Partners in Development Zambia
Saturday, March 11, from 8 a.m.-12 p.m.
Pay-Double Preview Party — Friday, March 10, 6-8 p.m.
The Spring Missions Sale is coming up! All proceeds go to Deaf Teen Quest and Partners in Development, Zambia.
Retired CBF field personnel, Lonnie Turner, candidly affirms, "I work for my wife, Fran,” who founded Partners in Development (PID). Because of their 30-year history in Zambia, the Turners can see the needs and how to address them. Their focus is on health care, clean water, and education for girls. Lonnie is also passionate about the endangered black rhinoceros and teaching kids to play basketball. Money sent to PID is life changing to those receiving education and clean water. For more information about PID, speak with Paul Simmons, Betty Simmons, Janis Eberenz, or Phyllis McCoy, all of whom have visited the Turners in Zambia.
Fran and Lonnie will be speaking after Wednesday Night Dinner on Wednesday, March 8. Please call the church office at 502.895.2459 by 12 p.m., on Tuesday, March 7, to make a reservation.
Donations of merchandise are welcome and should be taken to the racquetball court in the Family Life Center. Tax receipts are available from Betty Newcomer or Mary Jackson. Volunteers are pricing on Wednesdays from 3-5 p.m. Please consider volunteering by donating items, helping to price on Wednesdays, or helping the weekend of the yard sale. For more information or to volunteer, contact Mary Jackson at mherdjack@bellsouth.net, Betty Newcomer at beronn43@gmail.com, or Tonya Underwood at willowhera@gmail.com.
Broadway's Prayer Garden
Several years ago as part of a Girl Scout project, Nikki Rogers (daughter of Connie and Jim) envisioned and created a Prayer Garden for the church, located in the field between the east parking lot and Chippewa Road.
After a few years of overgrowth, the Garden has been uncovered and will be restored by the Grounds Committee – with your help! We encourage you to walk in the field to see where it is, and to participate in its restoration. We are asking all Broadway gardeners, as you divide your perennial plants this spring, to give some of those plants to the Garden. And we invite you to plant them (or have us plant them) in a church-wide grounds workday on Saturday, April 29. Not only will you be making the area more beautiful with your plants, you will be offering your prayers to your fellow church members.
Plants needed (perennials only!) include: Hostas, Lirope, Daylilies, Daisies, Black Eyed Susans, Coneflowers, and Hellebores.

Courtyard Tree
The oak tree in the main courtyard has long outgrown its space. It is no longer the pretty shade tree it once was.
In fact, the tree has become dangerous to Broadway members and the building. Roots have caused the courtyard pavers to pop, making it difficult to walk safely. Falling limbs have damaged the roof numerous times over the past several years. Clogged gutters and downspouts have backed up, resulting in water and structural damage inside the walkways surrounding the courtyard. A lot of money has been spent trimming the tree, repairing water damage, and clearing out the gutters. It's time for the tree to be removed.
In the next few months, the tree will be gone. In its place will be a level courtyard and more appropriate-sized plantings. It will be a beautiful place once again. And no one will have to worry about falling limbs!
