Please know of our thoughts and prayers for you and your loved ones as you travel along this journey.  We know this is an emotional time for you and wish to make the planning of the service as meaningful and simple as possible.

Capital Campaign and St Stephen

Capital Campaign and St Stephen

Two things: 1. Thanks to the Capital Campaign Team, 2. Reflections on Pentecost Sunday at St. Stephen.

  1. Thank you again to the congregation for exceeding our half million dollar goal for pledges to our Capital Campaign.  And thanks especially to the outstanding team that made it possible.  At times, I play a crucial role in something good we do, but not this time.  This one was all about the effort of a super team!  The Co-Chairs were Walter Jones and Robin Riddle; Lilly Davis, Lee Lester, and Scott Kimbell worked with staff member Matt Thompson on the communications; Carolyn Sisk and Claudia Wells developed the prayer guides; Jim Ratcliffe assisted with major gifts; Betsy Cherry (Church Business Administrator) provided key support, along with help from the ministers and Carol Lundberg.  My thanks to all of them!

  2. The Spirit clearly moved in worship with St. Stephen Church on Pentecost Sunday!  The outpouring of love and hospitality on the part of their members, and the warmth and openness our members brought into worship, were a tremendous witness to the power of God to bring down barriers that too often separate us.  Especially powerful was the witness of the combined choirs.  The music was fantastic!  Secretary Clinton’s decision to come to the service, which I was informed of the day before the service, certainly made for an interesting element and has since generated a lot of publicity, but the heart of the day for me was the worship and the warmth of Christian fellowship.  Thank you to all who were able to be part of it! (If you'd like to see a note I sent the deacons with more detailed information click here.)

Envelope Fundraiser - Youth

Envelope Fundraiser - Youth

You will soon see something new in the Atrium and Friendship Hall on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights! You will see envelopes, numbered 1-100. Each envelope will cost the same amount as its number, so envelope number 1 will cost $1, envelope number 50 will cost $50, and so forth. Inside each envelope you purchase will be the picture of, and some information about, one of our youth here at Broadway. Our hope is that you will put this someplace where you will see it regularly, and when you see it, you will take a moment to pray for that youth. Then throughout the rest of the school year and the summer, I would encourage you to continue to follow up with that youth and see how you can continue to specifically pray for them. Thank you in advance for the many ways that Broadway supports, includes, and encourages the youth ministry!

Capital Campaign First Fruits

Capital Campaign First Fruits

Your Capital Campaign Steering Committee is thrilled, as we are sure the entire congregation is thrilled, with the success of the campaign.  Commitment Sunday provided a wonderful surprise that resulted in meeting and surpassing our goal. Our pledges as of May 10 are $522,288.  Now we must begin to honor those pledges.  We are designating May 22 as “First Fruits Sunday.”  We certainly understand that there are going to be a large number of ways that pledges will be fulfilled. Some have elected to give their entire pledge immediately, others weekly or monthly, and others at different intervals. For those of you who will be giving a portion of your pledge in this immediate time period, we ask that you include those gifts in the offering on May 22. On the next Sunday we will announce our “first fruits” total. Again, we thank you for your generosity and support.

Testimony - April 25 - Jeff Sanders

Minute for Ministry April 25, 2016
Good morning….I moved to Louisville in 1988 after I graduated from college. I was dating Sarah at the time and we starting looking for a church home as a couple. Even though Sarah grew up at Broadway, we looked around at several churches but came back to Broadway for the people and warmth of this community of faith. Later, we got married in this sanctuary and I still remember the joy I felt when I saw her walking down the aisle. And yes, I know…I did marry up!
Fast forward a few years and we have our daughters, Emily and then Meagan. I remember the excitement and anxiousness of a new parent at each of their baby dedications – just like the one that we are about to have for Liam Whitehead. Both of our girls have been loved and supported here. They learned stories in Sunday School and children’s church of God’s love for them. They sang in choir and played handbells as Broadway encourages children and youth to lead us in worship. As teenagers, both learned to serve others through hands-on activities and mission trips in the youth group. They both followed their calling and asked to join the church. They were baptized here – right up there. They have made lifelong friendships and created wonderful memories because of their involvement in their church home.

Through Broadway, Sarah and I have been given opportunities to learn, to teach, to lead and to serve both in the church and in the community. We have played on sports teams together over the years. We too have lifelong friends that we have made. We have been given the opportunity to grow as individuals and Christians in our church home.
When my mother moved back to Louisville 2 ½ years ago, she joined the church because it felt right for her. We did not talk about it beforehand but on her first Sunday here, she just got up and walked down the aisle to join. She felt at home here. This is her church home now.
I have seen first-hand the encouraging, loving impact that this church has had on my family. And my heart is grateful.

Now my church needs my assistance. The capital campaign committee has done a great job of helping me to understand why we need to do this, what the funds will be used for and how the process will work. If you have any questions about any of these, please reach out to Robin or Walter or go to the church website. They have a lot of great information posted there. Sarah and I have committed to help. This is our church home.
Next Sunday (May 1st) is commitment Sunday. We will have pledge boxes at all the doors of the sanctuary for you to turn in your pledge cards. In the meantime, the committee has reached out to the deacons and numerous other leaders in the church to ask for them to submit their commitments a little early so that we could share with you how well this campaign has started. At this time, we have $178,000 committed of the $500,000 goal. $178,000. That is a great start!

If you have not already committed, I hope that you will spend some time this week thinking and praying about your decision. Your church home needs you as well.  Thank you.

For the Long Run

For the Long Run

Capital Campaign 2016

HOW WILL YOU DECIDE?
All of us will be asked to make our own giving decisions and to do so prayerfully, thoughtfully and cheerfully. These kinds of decisions are best made over a period of time rather than instantly at one time. So, how to proceed? The following is a guide to making your or your family’s giving decision.

PRAY:  Seek God’s leadership in determining the specific amount God would have you give. Pray individually and with your family, or a close friend.

DISCUSS:  With your family or a friend, talk about your prayer experiences regarding your gift. How much is God leading you to give? How can you give that amount?

PRIORITIZE:  Evaluate all the ways you invest your financial resources. What priority should your church and its ministry have at this time? How does your gift represent sacrifice for you and your family?

COMMIT: Trust God to sustain you in your giving decision, just as you trusted God to lead you in making this decision. Give the gift amount that has meaning and value for you.

“Everyone must make up their mind as to how much they should give.  Don’t force anyone to give more than they really want to, for cheerful givers are the ones God prizes.”
II Corinthians 9:7

WHAT IS MY PART?
Our For the Long Run capital campaign is seeking gifts and commitments to give that are “over and above” the members’ regular giving that supports the annual ministry plan. How does a person or family decide on what amount they will give?

A story comes to mind. During one church’s capital campaign, a church member came up to the pastor on Sunday and said, “I have already decided on my campaign gift. Here, I brought it with me and I hope it is the right amount.”  As an envelope was handed to the pastor, he replied, “I am sure it is the right gift if it represents you.” The member then paused and took back the envelope saying, “I will have to think about that some more.”

The next Sunday the member again approached the pastor and said, “Pastor, here is my campaign gift. I hope it is the right amount.” The pastor replied again, “I am sure it is the right gift if it represents you.” The member, looking a little frustrated, took back the envelope and said, “Well I really do have to think about this and I might as well pray about it too.”

On the third Sunday the member came up to the pastor, handed him an envelope and said, “Pastor, here is my gift and believe me, this gift represents me!”

Deciding to give an “over and above” gift is a challenging process. It requires thought and prayer and finally action. No effort will be made to tell any person what he or she should commit. There are, however, some questions that might be helpful in determining one’s part.

“Have I asked God to direct my decision?”
“Does this amount give an accurate reflection of who I am and what my resources are?”
“How does this amount represent sacrifice for me?”

Worship Care

Worship Care

When families come before the church to dedicate their lives to nurturing the spiritual development of their children, we as a church commit to partnering with them, introducing their children to the love of the God who created them. So far this year, we have spoken the covenantal words of the dedication litany four times, with even more to come!

As the number of children at Broadway continues to grow, our need for caring, nurturing individuals who take the words of the dedication litany to heart grows as well.

Worship Care volunteers are often the first people children meet when they come to Broadway. As such, they become one of the first examples of Christ’s love that children will encounter. Likewise, these volunteers share the love of Christ with Broadway’s families - old and new alike - by allowing them to worship God knowing that their children are cared for and loved.

Our parents are currently scheduled for six Sundays a year of Worship Care volunteering. When volunteers do not show up, parents end up being the first “on call,” simply due to the fact that they were dropping their children off in the nursery. Far too often, young couples in the church are not afforded the opportunity to worship together on Sunday mornings.

One of the most tangible ways that you can uphold the words spoken during the dedication litany is through volunteering in our Worship Care ministry. You can sign up for a particular number of Sundays (even one Sunday a year will make a huge impact to the Worship Care ministry), and choose your preference of age group (babies, toddlers, preschool, elementary). Descriptions for each role are available on the website.

Please consider helping with this vital ministry. Your investment impacts the lives of so many in our community.

If you are willing to serve in this ministry, please contact Emily Holladay at
emily@broadwaybaptist.org, or 502.895.2459, and let her know how many Sundays you are available to serve, and where you would most like to serve!

Testimony - April 10 - Lee Lester

Good morning,

I’d like to thank Robin Riddle and Walter Jones on their leadership during the Capital Campaign process;  to see their faces light up when talking about Broadway, after all these years – it’s not only contagious, it’s truly inspirational.

I am from a small town just south of Lexington and from the time I was born until I turned 18, I went to the same little country Church that was actually pastored by Susan Reed’s father – Brother Don.

When I think back to my childhood, my most fond memories and core values stem from growing up at Bruner’s Chapel Baptist Church.  However – upon graduation and ultimately moving to Louisville I came to the stark realization that there were not hundreds of Bruner’s Chapels sprinkled throughout Kentucky.  My wife and I moved from Church to Church, never finding a place to truly call home – that is until we walked through the front doors and into the beautiful sanctuary at Broadway; and that’s the reason I’m giving.

I am giving because I want my daughters, Lucy and Lane, to have the same fun, exciting, spiritual, Christian upbringing and memories that I hold so dear.  I love when I tuck Lucy and Lane in to bed at night – they know Miss Heidi made them that blanket.  I am excited about Curtis and Patrick teaching them about Jesus.  And I am thankful for all the strong, graceful, Christian women we have at Broadway for Lucy and Lane to look up to and grow with.

On behalf of the Capital Campaign committee – we are excited to announce that every deacon has affirmed their commitment, and we encourage you – when it is time to fill out that pledge card – to think back to your first love of Broadway and what is it that has kept you coming for all these years.

No story or reason for giving will be the same but I think we can all agree – There is a lot to be proud of and thankful for here at Broadway Baptist Church.

Thank You,

-Lee Lester
