Jubilate Reflection

Jubilate Deo means to be joyful in the Lord, which is exactly how almost everyone who participates as a singer, conductor, or host felt during and after our festival this year. This was my third year of being a Jubilate Festival Singer, and I plan on doing it for as long as I can. For many of you reading this, you don’t really know what Jubilate is, so let me give you the run down of the summer tour. First, of all those who are interested sign up, either as a singer or chaperone. Then we gather at the church early one morning and head down to Georgia. When we get there, if we aren’t too late, we practice and practice. Finally we head to the hotels and sleep, only to wake up early the next day to travel to our first concert. Already it might seem exhausting, but in all reality people don’t get too tired until the third day. While on the tour, we meet people from all over the south, and become great friends. Thanks to the technology of today, we can keep in touch. I can remember my first Jubilate when I sat next to complete strangers from Macon, Georgia, who ended up becoming wonderful friends. The churches who participate in Jubilate are from Macon and Atlanta, Georgia, Aiken, South Carolina, and, of course, Louisville, Kentucky. The choir directors book the concerts and work tirelessly to make sure the trip runs smoothly. Everyone dedicates their time and money to the tour, but, in all reality, we also dedicate our hearts. You see, Jubilate isn’t all about singing, or about being sleep deprived, but it is about finding how God can work in our lives to make us better people. The Jubilate Choir Tour has brought me joy and has strengthened my relationship with God, as it does for all those who listen.

Youth Sunday Recap

Youth Sunday Recap

Broadway has a longstanding tradition of excellent worship on Sunday mornings. It is thoughtful, deep, and meaningfully influences the lives and spirits of those who participate. With this in mind, I recognize it is no small thing to ask the congregation to turn over that worship to the youth. Yet every year, and in small ways throughout the year, you do exactly that: empower the youth to plan and practice meaningful worship. And so allow me to say on behalf of the youth ministry, that we are grateful for your faith and trust. Our youth poured much time, effort, and thought into our Youth Sunday service this year, and I thank you for supporting them by your encouragement, kind words, and participation in the service itself. There is a common misconception that the youth are the future of the church. They are not. They are a vital part of the church today, and you allow them to live into that role and that calling. Thanks be to God.

Passport

Passport

June 25-July 1, the Broadway youth will be travelling to Greensboro, N.C. to Passport Choices, an annual summer youth camp we attend. While there, our youth will have the opportunity to work on mission sites throughout Greensboro, as well as learn how their individual gifts can find expression in various forms of ministry, whether that’s art, music, recreation, or anywhere in between. The theme verse this year comes from John 10: “I came so that everyone would have life and have it in its fullest.”

Youth Trading Cards

Youth Trading Cards

Act now to make sure there is a card for you! This fundraiser is a great opportunity for folks to become partners with the youth ministry. Inside each envelope is a “trading card” of one of your wonderful youth, with their picture, some information about them, but also a prayer request the particular youth has requested. Our hope is you will put these trading cards in a place where you will see them often, and pray for them when you do, and that you will then follow up with your youth and see how their prayer needs change. All proceeds from the fundraiser go to support our summer trips to Passport in North Carolina in June and to Slovakia in July. The envelopes currently range in price from $30 to $95.

Envelope Fundraiser - Youth

Envelope Fundraiser - Youth

You will soon see something new in the Atrium and Friendship Hall on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights! You will see envelopes, numbered 1-100. Each envelope will cost the same amount as its number, so envelope number 1 will cost $1, envelope number 50 will cost $50, and so forth. Inside each envelope you purchase will be the picture of, and some information about, one of our youth here at Broadway. Our hope is that you will put this someplace where you will see it regularly, and when you see it, you will take a moment to pray for that youth. Then throughout the rest of the school year and the summer, I would encourage you to continue to follow up with that youth and see how you can continue to specifically pray for them. Thank you in advance for the many ways that Broadway supports, includes, and encourages the youth ministry!

A Look Back: Caroling And Winter Food Baskets

A Look Back: Caroling And Winter Food Baskets

Caroling And Winter Food Baskets

Every year the church youth deliver the food collected from White Christmas to Cochran Elementary. The food is divided into boxes according to the sizes of the recipient families. Our food is then paired with Christmas presents that parents can give their kids. The recipients of the food boxes and gifts are financially struggling families who will now have something to eat and give to their kids for Christmas. When we personally deliver the boxes to the families, it is cool to see how grateful they are and appreciative of what we do. Some of the parents even get emotional, because without this program they may have little to eat and nothing to give their own children for Christmas. I have learned that many people don’t have the opportunities I do and that I shouldn’t take what I have for granted. It puts in perspective the gaps in our society in terms of financial status and by helping the struggling families I feel that we help bridge that gap. Making these food deliveries every year has meant a lot to me, but even more to the families we help. I hope it continues to benefit more people each year.

A Look Back: Disciple Now

A Look Back: Disciple Now

Disciple Now

What does Disciple Now mean to me? Yes, it’s a weekend retreat away from home. Yes, it’s fun. Yes, it’s a good way to bond with other youth. Yet I come out of every weekend with a new perspective.

This year, the theme of Disciple Now centered on how our relationship with God is anchored, specifically through music. I wouldn’t consider myself musically gifted, unless you count joining the middle school band and occasionally playing the piano in my living room. However, I’ve found myself growing closer to God through song in the past couple of years. Youth choir, handbells, and Jubilate, Broadway’s annual youth choir tour, has definitely played a significant role in that. But it was Disciple Now that opened my eyes to see this connection between myself, music, and my faith.

As a senior, leaving for college soon is one of the most terrifying thoughts I’m constantly reminded of. There was one song the youth sang this year in worship at Disciple Now that made me feel at peace with growing up so quickly and leaving my home in a few months; it’s called “Oceans.” One of the verses says,

“You call me out upon the waters /
The great unknown where feet may fail /
And there I find You in the mystery /
In oceans deep /
My faith will stand.”

The first time I heard this song, specifically this verse, something happened that is difficult to express in writing. I truly felt God’s presence surrounding me, reassuring me and telling me it’s okay to feel upset about leaving behind a place I love so much. Disciple Now is a time of change and of growth, and I can say I have continued to grow in my faith year after year of attending; I will never forget what I have learned from this retreat. It is one my favorite youth activities and it is a bittersweet moment that this past Disciple Now was my last.

A look back: Jubilate

A look back: Jubilate

Jubilate has been an awesome experience for me personally, as well as my faith. When the Jubilate program was first introduced to Broadway Baptist, I was very hesitant to sign up. I knew that we would be singing all weekend, and since I was not an experienced singer, that was definitely intimidating for me. I ended up giving it a try, and I am very glad I did. Jubilate quickly became one of my favorite church experiences. In the winter session, we spend the entire MLK weekend learning around 8 pieces with a choir of 5 churches and over 100 youth, polishing them so that we can perform them at a couple of churches that Sunday. Then, over a week in the summer, we practice and perform the songs for various churches, groups, and people all over the South. While it is a lot of work, it is a very rewarding experience learning with a large choir of people my age, and being able to share the music and touch other’s lives. Jubilate has allowed me to meet many people, improve my musical abilities, and share God’s word through music.

Disciple Now Reflection

Disciple Now Reflection

Over the weekend of November 13-15, the Broadway youth gathered for our annual Disciple Now style retreat. The theme for the weekend was “Anchored,” and we were looking at how music and hymns can help inform our faith, and keep us anchored to God. Over the course of the weekend, we ate together, worshiped together, studied together, and laughed together. We also spent time at the JCPS Clothing Assistance Program, which serves to provide clothing to students within the school system, as well as their families. During this time, our youth volunteered a combined total of 80 hours to this program and our community. Thank you to the youth, and especially the leaders and volunteers, for making this another successful weekend!

Passport Recap

Passport Recap

Over the week of June 21, 20 youth and chaperones from Broadway traveled to Greensboro College in Greensboro, NC, to participate in Passport Choices 2015. Throughout the week, our youth learned about what it means to Flip our perspective, Stand up for those who need our support, Speak the truth with grace and love, and Act out of a place of faith in God. In addition, our group spent approximately 240 hours learning how our giftedness can be used to serve God, through working in a community garden, learning how better to serve and lead in worship, learning how we were created for activity and play, or learning life skills to more effectively thrive out in the "real world" after high school. As always, the youth served as model examples of what it means to be a group that has fun together, respects and supports each other, and treats others with respect. We are grateful for everyone who helped support the trip through your prayers and funds. We are also thankful for Erin McCoy, John Dotson, Chris Caldwell, and Emily Holladay for chaperoning the trip.
