2016-17 Ministry Plan
Outreach

The mission of our outreach ministry is to invite, welcome, and introduce people to Broadway by connecting them to the life of the congregation. In 2014, we recognized that almost every person who visits Broadway looking for a church home visits our website first, and spent the majority of the year launching a new website. We also brought a uniform look to our communications with a new logo and tagline. These efforts to communicate effectively continued in 2015, as we sought to enhance our presence online and through social media.

Our primary focus for 2015, however, was to find more effective ways to welcome and follow-up with guests who find their way to our church, including a more stream-lined process for reaching out to guests after their first visit, as well as training members to engage with guests around them in hospitable and meaningful ways.

The 2016-2017 Outreach Ministry Plan builds upon the 2015 goals, continuing efforts to reach out to guests, providing a high touch to each person who comes through our doors and furthering Broadway's reputation for sharing love and care to the community outside the church.

2016-17 Goals

I. Growth of Younger Populations:

Increase promotion and education of events hosted by Broadway.

  • Advertise Easter Egg Hunt by hanging promotional Easter Eggs on doors around the church neighborhood.
    • Update March 2017: A volunteer group is putting together eggs so that we can distribute last week of March/first week of April
  • Host at least one ad on local NPR stations.
  • Create timeline for banners and other signage in the church lawn.
    • Update November 2016: Emily Holladay created draft and is reviewing with ministers for final approval.
  • Send strategic mailings to the community for upcoming events, using different mail routes each time. Events include, but are not limited to:
    • Service in September
    • Trunk or Treat
    • Youth Trivia Night
    • Easter Egg Hunt
    • Summer Playdates

Participation in St. Matthews Chamber of Commerce annual events at Brown Park, which involve many community families: Trick or Treat at Brown Park and Light Up Brown Park.

  • October 2016 - Participated in Trick or Treat at Brown Park by passing out candy and flyers.
  • December 2016 - Participating in Light Up Brown Park by making and passing out hot chocolate

II. Ministry Outside the Walls of the Church:

  • Create at least two church "swag" items for church members to have/buy that will increase the church's branding in the community.
  • Make name-tags for ministers and deacons to wear in church and at outside events to make them easily recognizable as leaders of the church.
  • Create umbrellas with the church logo for church members to give out to people in community.
  • Purchase Canopy Tent with church logo for use at outside events.

III. Greater Diversity:

Continued engagement with community partners, including:

  • St. Matthews Chamber of Commerce
    • October 2016 - Participated in Trick or Treat at Brown Park by passing out candy and flyers.
    • December 2016 - Participating in Light Up Brown Park by making and passing out hot chocolate.

IV. Maintaining Traditions and Values:

Enrich new guest’s experience at Broadway by improving accessibility of information, hospitality, and follow-up after first visit through the following methods:

  • Intentionally engaging Sunday School teachers and church members to greet guests who come to help them find their way around and find a Sunday School class that fits their needs.
    • As of March 2017, this has been consistently happening, and many people have reached out to first time guests to invite them to Sunday School
  • Member profiles included in the Friendship Folders for guests to get to know more about the people of Broadway.
    • December 2016 - Added 15 new faces to the Friendship Folder stories
  • Enlisting a college student to create "mall directory" style maps to display around the church to make the building more accessible.
  • Minute for Ministries to take place in worship at least three out of every four Sundays to help connect people with the ministries of the church.
    • As of December 2016, we have had Minute for Ministries on at least 8 of 10 Sundays this fall.
  • Providing practical tools for telling our church’s story using positive identity language each time we give out a “swag” item.
  • Host at least two guest events, during which we will engage guests who have visited Broadway within the past six months.
    • September 2016 - Hosted guest and new member luncheon catered by Little Greek
  • Create and implement plan for strategic follow-up after events to record information about how guests found out about the church/event.

Enhance usability and functionality of communication tools.

  • Creation of Communications Plan to facilitate ease of information sharing across areas.
    • November 2016 - Preliminary plan created and sent to team and committee leaders.
  • Revision avenues of communications, including development of Quarterly magazine style newsletter to highlight stories from the church.
    • November 2016 - Instagram and Twitter pages added
    • December 2016 - Worship Folder Insert now bullet style for ease of reading. Newsletters available online and in information rack contain full versions of information.
    • January 2017 - Beginning campaign to rename the church newsletter.
