Ministry Plan 2016-17

The Youth Ministry at Broadway is comprised of students in grades 6-12 and their families.  Our mission is to create Christ centered community that embraces difficult questions, explores stories of faith, and cultivates young people to approach life with a sense of grace, compassion and justice.

The church wide theme for 2016 is Prayer and Blessing.  To this end the youth will:

  • Write notes of thanks to a teacher or instructor who has been a blessing to him/her in the Fall and Spring
  • Send personal notes to senior adults on the church prayer list letting them know we spent time in prayer for them
  • Study prayers found in the Bible (Lord’s Prayer, Hannah’s, David’s etc.) and discuss the role of prayer in our daily lives

The Youth Ministry Plan for 2016/2017 is modeled after a congregation wide Visioning Process that took place in 2015. The visioning process birthed the four bold themes below.
Reaching Younger Populations

  1. Incorporate youth into the entire fabric of life at Broadway => affirms young people’s place in the Church
  2. Have meetings with parents of 5th – 7th graders => ensure the transition to the youth group is a successful as possible, will allow a deeper understanding of how to relate to this population
  3. Fully plan and lead an 11:00 Sunday worship service at Broadway => cultivate leadership, worship planning and execution skills, builds self-esteem, raises youth’s profile in the larger congregation

Ministry Beyond the Walls of Broadway

  1. Youth Pastor will engage youth outside the church four times a semester.  This could include meeting for breakfast, attending a sporting event, concert, birthday etc.
  2. In addition to annual service events (Service in September, KBF Missions Weekend, Disciple Now), youth will participate in one additional service project each semester.
  3. Service as a means of learning and personal growth will be emphasized.  (In contrast to one sided, entitled charity efforts)

Embracing Diversity

  1. Through fellowship, service and worship, we will get to know one another intimately, allowing us to celebrate the differences that make us unique.
  2. Through the lens of Scripture we will participate in difficult conversations about race, study Louisville’s racial history, and learn from our black neighbors by attending a service at a traditionally Black church.
  3. Youth will be challenged to have conversations with peers who do not claim Christianity and invite them to events at Broadway – not with the goal of conversion, but rather of learning and expanding.

Balancing Innovation and Tradition

  1. Youth will clean and organize the Youth Basement.
  2. We will study “insider” Church lingo and how we might become inclusive and inviting in our language
  3. Youth will continue to have thoughtful scripture study in Sunday School and youth group that brings about dialogue on how to actively engage our faith development in the 21st century
