Blessing of Teachers and Students

Blessing of Teachers and Students

Blessing of Teachers and Students
Sunday, August 14
11 a.m. Worship

On Sunday, August 14, we are celebrating Promotion Sunday for our youth and children. As always, children and youth will move into new classes based on their age or year in school. This morning will be especially important for them as they get to know their new teachers!

Again this year, we will also honor Promotion Sunday by blessing teachers and students from within our congregation and community during worship. We hope this will be a meaningful time of prayer and encouragement, as we lift up those among us who will spend the next 10 months learning, teaching, and investing in the lives of the youngest members of our community.

We hope that you will make an extra effort to be present on August 14 to offer up prayers and words of affirmation. We have invited teachers and students from around the community to come and hope to see many new faces in our midst. Please be there to offer true Broadway hospitality!

This school year, the ministry staff is facilitating a churchwide focus on blessing, and the Blessing of Teachers and Students will kickoff that focus in a meaningful and tangible way. We encourage you to invite teachers and students that you know so that we can extend the blessings we offer as a congregation further.

We intentionally planned for this Sunday to take place the Sunday after school (JCPS) starts to allow more time for students and teachers alike to invite others to come. We also hope this will tie-in well with the kickoff of our Fall schedule, as well as the Ministry Fair on August 21. As you greet new people, please be sure to invite them back for Wednesday night and the Ministry Fair.

Column by Chris Caldwell

First, let me welcome Brianna Wheatley to our staff for this summer.  Brianna connected with us through the mayor’s Summer Works program, and because we are a nonprofit, the program is paying her salary for the summer.  This is a great chance for us to get some extra help and for Brianna to gain experience working in an office environment.  Please be sure to introduce yourself if you pass through the office.  My thanks to one of our church members, who suggested we connect with Summer Works as an additional way of focusing on one of our discernment process priorities: ministering to those outside the walls of our church.

Second, while we will continue focusing on our discernment priorities (being more diverse, ministering outside the walls of the church, reaching younger populations, and balancing innovation and tradition), the ministerial staff is beginning work on an overall theme we will layer on top of those priorities for the next year.  The theme we have in mind is “Prayer and Blessing.”  You’ll be hearing more about that in the early fall as we update our ongoing Ministry Plans.

Show Me All Your Scars

Show Me All Your Scars

Show Me All Your Scars
New book with contributing author, Dr. Leslie Townsend

I wanted to let you know that a book just came out to which I was one of 20 contributors. It’s called, “Show Me All Your Scars: True Stories of Living with Mental Illness,” and is available in paperback at Amazon.com. The stories in the book are well written and very inspiring. All are written by survivors and are geared toward showing that many of us who suffer (or have suffered) mental illness are competent high-functioning people. My hope is that it might reach the hands of those who question their own self-worth or mental health and who might be reassured that they are part of the human (and God’s) family, and that all are welcome.

Capital Campaign 2016

Capital Campaign 2016

Our Capital Campaign has formally concluded with resounding success. With a goal of $500,000, we are happy to announce we currently have received pledges of just over $600,000 and have already collected $135,000. We do not have the words to express our sincere thanks and are grateful that you decided the upkeep of our buildings and grounds is worthy of your financial support. In return, the church promises to be good stewards of this money and will use it only for long term capital needs. Further, these funds can only be used with approval of both the Finance Committee and the Trustees. Your gracious support will continue to provide a buffer for unexpected problems and protect the ministry budget for many years to come.

Praying for the LGBT Communities ~ Chris Caldwell

Your church staff is beginning conversations on a theme for the next Ministry Plan: “Prayer and Blessing.”  We plan to keep following through on the themes of the Discernment Process: greater diversity, ministering beyond the walls of the church, reaching younger populations, and balancing innovation and tradition.  But the “Prayer and Blessing” theme will be woven through those four areas, as well as worship and other parts of the life of the church.

Here is one example of how a prayerful act can be a blessing:

In the wake of the Orlando tragedy, I attended the community vigil held at the Big Four bridge.  After the vigil, the faith question for me was, “What else would Jesus do?” Actually, that was pretty easy to answer, given that I’ve read the New Testament a few times. I knew Jesus would go to a gay bar to let folks there know he was praying for them. So some Baptist pastor friends of mine, along with Dr. Muhammad Babar, went to four gay bars to deliver flowers and the message pictured with this article. We received lots of hugs, saw some tears shed, shed a few of our own, and in one bar even received a round of applause. I know we don’t agree on everything at Broadway, but I also know we agree on love. I’m proud to serve a church where I know loving gestures, even unorthodox ones, will be celebrated.

Youth Trading Cards

Youth Trading Cards

Act now to make sure there is a card for you! This fundraiser is a great opportunity for folks to become partners with the youth ministry. Inside each envelope is a “trading card” of one of our wonderful youth, with their picture, some information about them, but also a prayer request the particular youth has requested. Our hope is you would put these trading cards in a place where you will see them often, and pray for them when you do, and that you would then follow up with your youth and see how their prayer needs change. All proceeds from the fundraiser go to support our summer trips to Passport in NC and our trip to Slovakia in July. The envelopes currently range in price from $30 to $95.

Jubilate Reflection

Jubilate Deo means to be joyful in the Lord, which is exactly how almost everyone who participates as a singer, conductor, or host felt during and after our festival this year. This was my third year of being a Jubilate Festival Singer, and I plan on doing it for as long as I can. For many of you reading this, you don’t really know what Jubilate is, so let me give you the run down of the summer tour. First, of all those who are interested sign up, either as a singer or chaperone. Then we gather at the church early one morning and head down to Georgia. When we get there, if we aren’t too late, we practice and practice. Finally we head to the hotels and sleep, only to wake up early the next day to travel to our first concert. Already it might seem exhausting, but in all reality people don’t get too tired until the third day. While on the tour, we meet people from all over the south, and become great friends. Thanks to the technology of today, we can keep in touch. I can remember my first Jubilate when I sat next to complete strangers from Macon, Georgia, who ended up becoming wonderful friends. The churches who participate in Jubilate are from Macon and Atlanta, Georgia, Aiken, South Carolina, and, of course, Louisville, Kentucky. The choir directors book the concerts and work tirelessly to make sure the trip runs smoothly. Everyone dedicates their time and money to the tour, but, in all reality, we also dedicate our hearts. You see, Jubilate isn’t all about singing, or about being sleep deprived, but it is about finding how God can work in our lives to make us better people. The Jubilate Choir Tour has brought me joy and has strengthened my relationship with God, as it does for all those who listen.

Celebrating Susan Reed - Robin Riddle

Celebrating Susan Reed - Robin Riddle

I first met Susan Reed 10 years ago when a group of us from Broadway went to Virginia to surprise her at her ordination at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Richmond. She had just graduated from Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond and had recently been called to serve as our Minister to Youth at Broadway.

Susan and I hit it off right away, as did everyone at Broadway. The youth and the youth parents fell in love with her. I enjoyed working with Susan on the Youth Committee, spending weekends at Ichthus, helping with Disciple Now weekends, the Valentine Banquet, ski trips and many other activities.

I especially enjoyed watching Susan interact with my daughters, Brittany and Blair, as they became young adults. She mentored Brittany, as she became a minister herself, and did a beautiful job performing Blair’s wedding ceremony.

When Susan moved into the role of Associate Pastor of Spiritual Formation, I began working more closely with her on the Spiritual Formation Committee and now as Sunday School director.  It has been amazing watching her grow as a minister and a person, as she takes on more responsibilities and helps our church grow spiritually.

Susan is wise beyond her years. Her caring spirit and the loving way she reaches out to others is an inspiration to all. I have often sought her counsel when going through tough times, and celebrated with her during the good times. She is my friend as well as my pastor.

We are so blessed as a church to have Susan Reed with us these past ten years. Let us all celebrate Susan and celebrate with Susan on this special occasion.

Save the Date for Service in September

Save the Date for Service in September

Service in September will be held Sunday, September 11 at 12 p.m.
Service in September is a church-wide time of service in our community to commemorate the tragedy of 9/11 with a positive spirit of serving those around us.  Meet in Friendship Hall for a light lunch following worship.  We will then split up to do various service projects in the church and around Louisville. Projects will be 1-3 hours in length.  You may sign up for specific service projects at the Ministry Fair on August 21 or with Susan Reed at susanr@broadwaybaptist.org.  A complete list of projects will be available in August. All ages and skill sets are welcome!

Youth Sunday Recap

Youth Sunday Recap

Broadway has a longstanding tradition of excellent worship on Sunday mornings. It is thoughtful, deep, and meaningfully influences the lives and spirits of those who participate. With this in mind, I recognize it is no small thing to ask the congregation to turn over that worship to the youth. Yet every year, and in small ways throughout the year, you do exactly that: empower the youth to plan and practice meaningful worship. And so allow me to say on behalf of the youth ministry, that we are grateful for your faith and trust. Our youth poured much time, effort, and thought into our Youth Sunday service this year, and I thank you for supporting them by your encouragement, kind words, and participation in the service itself. There is a common misconception that the youth are the future of the church. They are not. They are a vital part of the church today, and you allow them to live into that role and that calling. Thanks be to God.

Passport

Passport

June 25-July 1, the Broadway youth will be travelling to Greensboro, N.C. to Passport Choices, an annual summer youth camp we attend. While there, our youth will have the opportunity to work on mission sites throughout Greensboro, as well as learn how their individual gifts can find expression in various forms of ministry, whether that’s art, music, recreation, or anywhere in between. The theme verse this year comes from John 10: “I came so that everyone would have life and have it in its fullest.”

First, congratulations to Susan Reed for 10 years ministering at Broadway!  A recurring theme during Susan’s tenure has been people commenting on how she continues to grow as a pastor.  I couldn’t agree more.  As a pastor to youth, and now as a pastor to the broader congregation, her ministry has been one of integrity, compassion, and effectiveness.

Second, please pray for our staff and many volunteers as things ramp up for summer.  For some folks, summer is a time to slow down a bit.  This is not true for anyone connected with youth or children!  Camps, Playdates, Field Trips, Jubilate, overseas missions, and more keep our ministers and all those who work with them very busy.  May God be lifted up in all that they do!
