Dear Broadway Baptist Church,

Thank you for your recent contributions of $10,000.00 for the Zimbabwe Seminary fund. Your gift makes you a part of a diverse community of more than 3,000 individuals and 133 progressive congregations responding to the continuing call of God in a rapidly changing world with a commitment to ecumenism, partnership in missions, radical hospitality and social justice.

Warmly,
Carole Collins

VBS - Thank You Note

VBS - Thank You Note

Last week's Vacation Bible School was a meaningful experience and successful new adventure for our church. Throughout the week, children and their parents participated in missions activities together, learning about Broadway's different mission partners. These activities allowed the families to serve God together and take part in the church's overall goals for missions.

The parents also took part in an adult Bible Study throughout the week led by Jeff Sanders. The time together was enriching, while also providing space for the parents to get to know one another better.

Most importantly, the children learned more about some of the great characters of the Bible, and God, who calls them to love and serve their family, friends, neighbors, and communities. We hope to raise compassionate children at Broadway who love Jesus and want to follow his example. This year's Vacation Bible School helped to move us in that direction!

Thank you to everyone who helped with VBS, either through donating supplies or your time. The children and families had a wonderful week serving God together, and none of it would have been possible without your help and prayers.

Jubilate - Recap

Jubilate - Recap

The summer Jubilate Youth Choir Festival Singers’ tour took place the first week of June.  Our youth choir here at Broadway joined voices with youth from five other churches as they toured around Georgia, Tennessee, and Kentucky. The shared experiences on the tour created a sense of unity and purpose for the entire group.  New friendships were formed, old ones renewed and ministry opportunities were abundant.

Charleston AME church shooting - Chris Caldwell

Last night at Charleston's Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, a white man walked into a prayer meeting in a black church.  Initial reports say he remained in the meeting an hour before opening fire. I’m a white pastor, but this past Sunday was a vacation day, so I went to a black church where an African American friend is the pastor.  Having just made this visit, and having worshiped in many African American churches, I think I have some sense of how the young man would have been received. . . .

Summer Missions Challenge!

Summer Missions Challenge!

One of the great things about Broadway is how we care for one another and our community. Throughout the month of June, the missions committee would like to encourage everyone in the church to participate in a service project to share God’s love with someone.  You may choose to participate in a project with your Sunday school class, small group, or help with another need you know about.  Wherever you choose to serve, we would love to hear about it and celebrate how God’s love is being shared.

There will be a list of service opportunities in the Atrium, Foyer, and by the church office.  At the bottom of that list is an “offering of time” slip.  Please fill out the bottom slip, tear it off, and leave it in one of the baskets by the sanctuary doors after worship.

Another way to celebrate how members of our church are being the hands and feet of Christ is through the Summer Missions Selfies bulletin board in the hallway outside of Friendship Hall. When you are working on your service project, take a picture.  You can email it to Susan Reed in the church office (susanr@broadwaybaptist.org), or print it out and hang it on one of those boards.  Let’s consider it a church-wide challenge to fill those boards with service pictures over the summer!

Thank you from the West End School!

To everyone at the Broadway Baptist Church,

Again, all of us at the West End School are so very grateful for your thoughtfulness and generosity.  The end of the school year is rapidly approaching and graduation will be on May 19.  All of the students have worked so hard and have made remarkable strides.  Much of this would not have been possible without your unfailing generous support.  When the boys do well moving to other schools it is you who have given them a good start and a hand up.

Bless you,

Deborah and Robert Blair

Dear Friends,

I was thrilled with the lovely birthday greeting you sent me for my 101st birthday.  Even though I cannot see it, my family read me every name on it and described it to me in great detail.  What a thoughtful, loving gift that continues to bring me joy.

I continue to appreciate the many ways the members at Broadway have stayed connected to me even though I cannot attend services regularly.  The calls, notes and visits are joyful reminders that you don't forget your senior members.  Thanks to each one of you.

With love,

Helen Graves.

Flower Ministry

Flower Ministry

Many thanks to all of you who have participated or are scheduled to participate in the Flower Ministry this year at Broadway. Flowers are a beautiful addition to our worship service and a thoughtful way to remember someone in the process. If you want to take advantage of this opportunity, there are five more Sundays available this year. They are: July 19, July 26, August 2, October 11, and October 18. If you would like to provide the Sanctuary flowers for one for these Sundays, please contact Carol Lundberg at 502.895.2459 or carol@broadwaybaptist.org.

Discernment Process

Discernment Process

Our congregational discernment process is moving forward. Members of our discernment team, along with others who were trained to help, met in small groups with over 75 youth and adults in the church. They talked with them about times when Broadway has had special meaning for them, and they talked with them about God’s hopes and dreams for Broadway’s future.  The thoughts were compiled and discussed by the discernment team, and then a second set of conversations among members occurred at the pot luck luncheon a few weeks ago. That day the team got some feedback and clarification.

Now the team will work on distilling and prioritizing the feedback into a report about where the congregation feels God is leading us.  On the basis of this, the staff, along with committees, teams, deacons, and other lay leaders, will make specific plans and set specific goals to help us move in that direction.

My thanks to the discernment team and to all those who are participating in the conversation!

Help Stock VBS!

Help Stock VBS!

As we make our final preparations for Vacation Bible School, we need your help! Please help us update our resources for VBS by taking a card with an item listed from one of the bulletin boards located in the Atrium and Foyer. Return the item you selected to one of the boxes located throughout the church on Sunday, June 7 or Sunday, June 14. You may also return items to the church office throughout the week.
