Courtyard Tree

The oak tree in the main courtyard has long outgrown its space. It is no longer the pretty shade tree it once was.

In fact, the tree has become dangerous to Broadway members and the building. Roots have caused the courtyard pavers to pop, making it difficult to walk safely. Falling limbs have damaged the roof numerous times over the past several years. Clogged gutters and downspouts have backed up, resulting in water and structural damage inside the walkways surrounding the courtyard. A lot of money has been spent trimming the tree, repairing water damage, and clearing out the gutters. It's time for the tree to be removed.

In the next few months, the tree will be gone. In its place will be a level courtyard and more appropriate-sized plantings. It will be a beautiful place once again. And no one will have to worry about falling limbs!

Requiem for the Living

Requiem for the Living

Sunday, March 26, 11 a.m.
Sanctuary

The Chancel Choir will sing Dan Forrest's compelling Requiem for the Living on Sunday, March 26 at 11 a.m., in the sanctuary.

A Requiem, at its core, is a prayer for rest - traditionally, for the deceased. The five movements of Dan Forrest's Requiem for the Living (2013), however, form a narrative just as much for the living, and their own struggle with pain and sorrow, as for the dead. The opening movement sets the traditional Introit and Kyrie texts - pleas for rest and mercy - using ever-increasing elaborations on a simple three-note descending motive.

The second movement, instead of the traditional Dies Irae, sets Scriptural texts that speak of the turmoil and sorrow which face humanity, while yet invoking musical and textual allusions to the Dies Irae. This movement juxtaposes aggressive rhythmic gestures with long, floating melodic lines, including quotes of the Kyrie from the first movement.

The Agnus Dei is performed next (a departure from the usual liturgical order) as a plea for deliverance and peace; the Sanctus, following it, becomes a response to this redemption.
The Sanctus offers three different glimpses of the "heavens and earth, full of Thy glory,” all of which develop the same musical motive: an ethereal opening section inspired by images of space from the Hubble Space Telescope, a stirring middle section inspired by images of our own planet as viewed from the International Space Station, and a closing section which brings the listener down to Earth, where cities teem with the energy of humanity.

The Lux Aeterna, which then closes the work, portrays light, peace, and rest - for both the deceased and the living.

Pleasure Ridge Park High School at Broadway

Pleasure Ridge Park High School at Broadway

On behalf of myself and the Advanced Choir students at Pleasure Ridge Park High School, we want to thank Broadway for allowing us to use the facilities on January 20 - 21. Between Friday evening and Saturday morning, the students rehearsed 8.5 hours on their Choral assessment repertoire, as well as their upcoming performance of Mozart's Requiem which will take place in Broadway's sanctuary, on May 3.

This retreat utilized the help of other JCPS choir directors, as well as Music Education students from Morehead State and the University of Louisville. While not rehearsing, the students enjoyed the use of the Family Life Center and gymnasium. All 70 women slept in the yoga room, hallway, and surrounding classrooms. The 28 men were housed in the Friendship hall divided rooms, which also doubled as sectional rehearsal space.

The highlight of the weekend was their reaction at the first chord sung by all 98 in the chancel. Needless to say, they are very excited about performing at Broadway in May!

Members of the PRP Choir will also be singing in worship at Broadway on Sunday, February 26. Please come to support these high school students and see the results of the great progress they have already made!

Broadway's Mission Sermon Series

 Broadway's Mission Sermon Series

Twelve years ago Broadway adopted this mission statement:

We seek to learn, live and proclaim Christ’s message of grace, hope and love through worship, fellowship and service.

Sundays, February 12-26 will feature sermons unpacking the three key themes embedded in this statement, and, I would add, embedded in the DNA of Broadway. Every time we have asked questions about strategy or have tried to discern God’s direction, these three themes have come up.

Church Staffing Proposal

Church Staffing Proposal

Church Staffing Proposal
In September of 2016, following a proposal to the church for ministry alignment, the Deacon body voted to withdraw the Co-pastor proposal and appoint an Ad Hoc committee to incorporate congregational thoughts regarding the ministry alignment plan and complete the process of developing and recommending an alignment plan that clearly addresses the mission and vision of Broadway Baptist Church. During the same month, we received the resignation of Chris Liles from the position as part time Associate Pastor (Youth).

The Deacons voted for the AdHoc committee to be appointed by the Deacon Chair, John Dotson, in consultation with the personnel committee. That committee has been formed, and those serving are: Bob Hook, chair, Lilly Davis, Emily Dotson, Emily Allen Kirby, Connie Rogers, Jeff Sanders, John Toma, Dave Watkins, and Ryan Williams.

The committee met Sunday, January 8, for an orientation with 2017 Deacon chair, Debby Griffin, and Vice Chair, George Coleman. John Dotson and Chris Caldwell were also in attendance. The resignation of Rev. Liles, and the transition of our Interim Youth Minister, Amanda Ashcraft into the role of Sunday Night Coordinator, prompted the AdHoc committee to explore staffing options as established by the congregation in a decision in 2010 to explore options rather than just replace the position.

In addition, committee members asked the Deacon body to develop a clear charge for their work. The Deacon body began the process of developing that charge at their monthly meeting on January 9. Once the deacons have completed and approved the clear guidelines for the committee, it will be sent to the committee to begin their work. Please keep the members of this committee in your prayers as they begin this very important work on behalf of our congregation.

Blessings,
Debby Griffin

New Name for Newsletter!

New Name for Newsletter!

Many of you have noticed changes to the newsletter and worship folder insert. Over the past few years, we have gradually been making changes to our communications structure in order to help keep each of you informed of church news and events in a timely manner.

During this time, we recognized that it is time for a new name for our newsletter.
“Off-Broadway” has served us well, but we’d like to introduce a name that reflects either the personality of our church, the content of the newsletter, or both!

So – we are calling on you! Over the next month, we will take your suggestions for the name of our newsletter. The new name will be announced in the March 3 newsletter, and the person who suggests the winning name will win a special prize!

You can submit ideas in three ways:

1. By filling out this short form online at www.broadwaybaptist.org/print-newsletters.

2. By e-mailing office@broadwaybaptist.org

3. By filling out a card and sticking it in one of the boxes located in the Atrium, Friendship Hall, or outside the Office.

Suggestions will be collected through Sunday, February 19. You are welcome to make more than one suggestion!

Deacon Prayer/Deacon Ordination

Deacon Prayer/Deacon Ordination

Over the last two years I have served at Broadway, Deacons Meetings have become some of my favorite monthly gatherings. Not only are the people chosen to serve in this capacity a joy to be around, but the thoughtful way in which they lead this church is inspiring to watch.

Each month at Deacons Meeting, one of the Deacons leads the group in a devotion. December’s devotion came from Ken Cox, who was installed as a Deacon last year. The words of his prayer at the conclusion of the devotion stuck with me as I looked forward to 2017, and how the new Deacon Body will live into its role as servant leaders:

Dear God, help us as individuals and as a church to be resilient, persistent in our mission to be better in Christ’s image, and to be adaptable, open to change and new ideas to stay relevant in a changing world.  This we ask in Jesus’s name. Amen.

On Wednesday, January 11, a new slate of Deacons will be ordained or installed. I can’t wait to work with Katherine Abbott Devins, Debby Griffin, Bob Hook, Janet Hymer, Shelly Jones, Stephen Lin, Steve Naiser, and Ron Newcomer, and see how they will lead the church in innovative and inspiring ways.

If you haven’t already, please make plans to attend the Deacon Ordination and Installation Service on Wednesday at 6 p.m., in the Chapel. Wednesday Night Dinner will begin at 5:15 p.m., and you can call the church office by Tuesday at 12 p.m., to make reservations.

A Note on the Staffing Proposal

A Note on the Staffing Proposal

A few folks have been asking for an update to the staffing proposal placed before the church in August, 2016. The original proposal failed to garner the strong consensus it needed to move forward, with revisions made throughout the fall. An ad hoc team is being formed that will begin its work in the coming weeks. Their task will be to propose a Staffing Ministry Alignment Plan that will organize the staff around the church’s priorities and also try to address issues regarding long term employee retention, recruitment, and advancement. Until this group’s work is approved by the church, we will remain in an interim status with youth ministry, and the pastoral staff will continue their excellent work in their current roles.

Inclement Weather

Broadway Baptist Church is concerned with the safety and well-being of all of its members and employees. From time to time, inclement weather may necessitate cancelling worship or other scheduled activities and/or closing the church office. In such instances, the Church Administrator or the Pastor will determine whether conditions warrant such cancellations or closings.

Notifications of cancellations or scheduled changes will be communicated to members via REACH Alert notices and posts on social media. An announcement will also be added to the website, and a message will be left on the office answering machine.
