Over the last two years I have served at Broadway, Deacons Meetings have become some of my favorite monthly gatherings. Not only are the people chosen to serve in this capacity a joy to be around, but the thoughtful way in which they lead this church is inspiring to watch.
Each month at Deacons Meeting, one of the Deacons leads the group in a devotion. December’s devotion came from Ken Cox, who was installed as a Deacon last year. The words of his prayer at the conclusion of the devotion stuck with me as I looked forward to 2017, and how the new Deacon Body will live into its role as servant leaders:
Dear God, help us as individuals and as a church to be resilient, persistent in our mission to be better in Christ’s image, and to be adaptable, open to change and new ideas to stay relevant in a changing world. This we ask in Jesus’s name. Amen.
On Wednesday, January 11, a new slate of Deacons will be ordained or installed. I can’t wait to work with Katherine Abbott Devins, Debby Griffin, Bob Hook, Janet Hymer, Shelly Jones, Stephen Lin, Steve Naiser, and Ron Newcomer, and see how they will lead the church in innovative and inspiring ways.
If you haven’t already, please make plans to attend the Deacon Ordination and Installation Service on Wednesday at 6 p.m., in the Chapel. Wednesday Night Dinner will begin at 5:15 p.m., and you can call the church office by Tuesday at 12 p.m., to make reservations.
