Your Deacons take their role of spiritual leaders seriously.  Therefore, they will be making it a priority to attend the annual “Service in September” on Saturday morning, September 19, 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. This is a wonderful opportunity for our church family to minister to our community in performing one of the various missions that has been planned. It is only a one half day commitment, and we invite you to come and work beside us. If you haven’t signed up yet, please talk to Susan Reed in the church office or visit the booth in the Atrium on Sunday morning.

F.R.E.E. Class Visits Burnett Avenue Baptist Church

On July 15th, The F.R.E.E. (Faith Reaching Every Edge) Sunday School class visited Burnett Avenue Baptist Church, a predominantly African-American Church on Hurstbourne Ave.  The pastor from Burnett Avenue,  Rev. Corrie Shull, led a book study on Jesus and the Disinherited by Howard Thurman. We received a very warm welcome.  The focus was on fear and how it prevents us from living an abundant life.  Rev. Shull shared many personal situations where fear created a barrier in his life, as did many in the congregation. In visiting with him after the study, we discussed the applications in our own lives.  I immediately thought of my students and how I interact with them, and how it is important not to manage them by using power to create fear.  I also thought of the fear that many of my students, mostly coming from the West End, deal with every day.  The opening lines from the chapter captures it perfectly, “Fear is one of the persistent hounds of hell that dog the footsteps of the poor, the dispossessed, the disinherited.” We left after a long talk inspired and with hopes of building relationships with the young people there.

Discernment Update - Chris Caldwell

Discernment Update - Chris Caldwell

Our church discernment process revealed that we sense God calling us to focus on four areas:

  1. Reaching out to young adults (and their children,  if they have children).
  2. Increasing our ministry “outside the walls of the church.”
  3. Growing more diverse as a church.
  4. Balancing the best in our church traditions (our DNA) while we grow in new ways.

Beginning next Sunday, August 30, I will preach a four part sermon series on these four areas. Our ministers and other leaders are formulating 2016 Ministry Plans, which will have a special focus on these four areas.  I’m excited about following God as we move forward together!

Promotion Sunday and Blessing of Teachers and Students

Promotion Sunday and Blessing of Teachers and Students

On Sunday, August 16, we are celebrating Promotion Sunday for our youth and children. As always, children and youth will move into new classes based on their age or year in school. This morning will be especially important for them as they get to know their new teachers!

This year, we will also honor Promotion Sunday in some new ways. During worship, we will have a blessing of teachers and students. We hope this will be a meaningful time of prayer and encouragement, as we lift up those among us who will spend the next 10 months learning, teaching, and investing in the lives of the youngest members of our community.

I hope that you will make an extra effort to be present on August 16 to offer up prayers and words of affirmation. We have invited teachers and students from around the community to come and hope to see many new faces in our midst. Please be there to offer true Broadway hospitality!

We intentionally planned for this Sunday to take place the Sunday after school (JCPS) starts to allow more time for students and teachers alike to invite others to come. We also hope this will tie-in well with the kickoff of our Fall schedule, as well as the Ministry Fair on August 23. As you greet new people, please be sure to invite them back for Wednesday night and the Ministry Fair.

Dear Broadway Family,

Words cannot express the love we feel for all of you who journeyed with us for the past five years through Drew’s illness.  Your encouraging words, cards, and support meant so much to him and our family.  Thank you also to those who brought us food and sent flowers in the last few weeks.  Thank you for all who participated in his service whether in the choir, playing an instrument, or just being there to comfort us. We thank Dr. Caldwell and Dr. Higdon for having the right words to help us begin to heal from losing our oldest son.  We are so proud of Jonathan and Tim for being able to eulogize their brother, their best friend, with poise and dignity.  They have grown up in a church that has always encouraged and nurtured their faith in God.  We have a mighty hole in our hearts that might not ever heal, but we know we have a church family that will be there to help us along the way.

Sincerely,
Heidi and Frank

Fourth of July Remembrance - Ron Newcomer

Fourth of July Remembrance - Ron Newcomer

This time of year we reflect back on this nations birth 239 years ago and the military struggles we have been engaged in since in order to maintain our freedom.

Each of us have served or have family members who have served over the years. Betty's family began that military service in the Revolutionary war and the last was her young brother Mike in Iraq.

Today I want to address those Veterans we do not generally think of who have served this country over the past 239 years. . . . .

Passport Column - Chris Caldwell

Passport Column - Chris Caldwell

As this column comes to you, I plan to be in Greensboro with our youth group.  We will be at a youth camping/missions experience called Passport.  (passportcamps.org)  If you’ve been around Broadway long, you’ve likely heard references to Passport by people in our youth and children’s ministries.

Here is Passport’s mission: "With Christ as our foundation, Passport empowers students to encounter Christ, embrace community, and extend grace to the world."

How do we partner with them in our ministry?  For years now, our youth and children have gone each summer to participate in the camps they run around the nation, and also in Africa.  Passport allows us to bring our young people to a structured week of Bible study, worship, service to the community, and fun!  Our youth spend a half day each day at Passport working on projects, such as painting homes for senior adults or entertaining children in special programs.  It also allows a time of intensive spiritual growth through daily Bible studies and worship.  Each year, around 2000 people participate in Passport camps.

Passport has been a crucial training ground for young ministers.  Susan Reed, Chris Liles, and Emily Holladay all worked with Passport back when they were young ministers!  We’ve also had 7 students from our youth group continue on to work at Passport Camps after graduating high school.

Broadway’s gifts played a key role in helping Passport to grow as a ministry.  Through your gifts to the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, you helped CBF provide initial seed money to begin Passport 22 years ago.  More recently, the Missions Committee approved a grant of $5,000 to help Passport with a capital campaign.  For the past two summers, we have hosted Passport camps in our building as they worked at mission projects around Louisville.

We certainly do all we can as a local congregation to nurture the spiritual formation of children and youth, but it’s great to have partners like Passport to help us achieve our goal!

Charleston AME church shooting - Chris Caldwell

Last night at Charleston's Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, a white man walked into a prayer meeting in a black church.  Initial reports say he remained in the meeting an hour before opening fire. I’m a white pastor, but this past Sunday was a vacation day, so I went to a black church where an African American friend is the pastor.  Having just made this visit, and having worshiped in many African American churches, I think I have some sense of how the young man would have been received. . . .

Summer Missions Challenge!

Summer Missions Challenge!

One of the great things about Broadway is how we care for one another and our community. Throughout the month of June, the missions committee would like to encourage everyone in the church to participate in a service project to share God’s love with someone.  You may choose to participate in a project with your Sunday school class, small group, or help with another need you know about.  Wherever you choose to serve, we would love to hear about it and celebrate how God’s love is being shared.

There will be a list of service opportunities in the Atrium, Foyer, and by the church office.  At the bottom of that list is an “offering of time” slip.  Please fill out the bottom slip, tear it off, and leave it in one of the baskets by the sanctuary doors after worship.

Another way to celebrate how members of our church are being the hands and feet of Christ is through the Summer Missions Selfies bulletin board in the hallway outside of Friendship Hall. When you are working on your service project, take a picture.  You can email it to Susan Reed in the church office (susanr@broadwaybaptist.org), or print it out and hang it on one of those boards.  Let’s consider it a church-wide challenge to fill those boards with service pictures over the summer!
