In many ways, we are now entering the most challenging period of the interim. By the time you read this article, the Ad Hoc Committee will have presented their recommendations to the Deacons who will have a month to think about and discuss the material before voting on their recommendation at the May Deacons’ meeting. This recommendation will come to the Church Business Meeting on May 23.
Please join us for the movie, Wonder, at our new time, 11 a.m. Enter through office door, take elevator to second floor, Room E-204. New this month will be lunch following the movie. For May, we will dine at McAlisters Deli with lunch on your own. Please call the church office at 502.895.2459 by Thursday, May 10, to let us know you plan on attending the movie and/or lunch.

To my Broadway friends,
I want to thank everyone for all your prayers, cards, flowers, food, and phone calls. It meant so much to me and really lifted my spirits. I am grateful to have so much love and friendship. Some of it goes back more than 60 years. I am finally on the road to recovery after my fall 5-5-15. I will always treasure your kindness and concern. A special thank you to Carolyn, Carol, Susan, and Chris.
In loving service to God,
Mary Sue Howell
After years of studying vocabulary and “The Art of Persuasion,” I find it impossible to adequately express appreciation for all the Love and Attention showered on me and my family upon the death of Marillyn. We recognize we have many devoted friends. You supported and comforted us well. To all, we say “Thank You.”

On July 15th, The F.R.E.E. (Faith Reaching Every Edge) Sunday School class visited Burnett Avenue Baptist Church, a predominantly African-American Church on Hurstbourne Ave. The pastor from Burnett Avenue, Rev. Corrie Shull, led a book study on Jesus and the Disinherited by Howard Thurman. We received a very warm welcome. The focus was on fear and how it prevents us from living an abundant life. Rev. Shull shared many personal situations where fear created a barrier in his life, as did many in the congregation. In visiting with him after the study, we discussed the applications in our own lives. I immediately thought of my students and how I interact with them, and how it is important not to manage them by using power to create fear. I also thought of the fear that many of my students, mostly coming from the West End, deal with every day. The opening lines from the chapter captures it perfectly, “Fear is one of the persistent hounds of hell that dog the footsteps of the poor, the dispossessed, the disinherited.” We left after a long talk inspired and with hopes of building relationships with the young people there.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to Broadway’s youth through the use of your Kroger Plus Card over the past year. Some of you may have been notified through Kroger that August is the time to re-link your account to Broadway’s youth through the Community Rewards website at kroger.com/communityrewards. If you have not re-registered with us by September 1, we will no longer benefit from your generosity. If you have trouble re-registering, or if you would like to register your Kroger Plus Card with Broadway, please see Chris Liles for more information!

Meet in Friendship Hall for breakfast at 8:30 a.m. Service projects will be at various locations at the church and around Louisville from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. All ages and skill sets are welcome! We will have a variety of service projects available.
Our church discernment process revealed that we sense God calling us to focus on four areas:
Beginning next Sunday, August 30, I will preach a four part sermon series on these four areas. Our ministers and other leaders are formulating 2016 Ministry Plans, which will have a special focus on these four areas. I’m excited about following God as we move forward together!

On Sunday, August 16, we are celebrating Promotion Sunday for our youth and children. As always, children and youth will move into new classes based on their age or year in school. This morning will be especially important for them as they get to know their new teachers!
This year, we will also honor Promotion Sunday in some new ways. During worship, we will have a blessing of teachers and students. We hope this will be a meaningful time of prayer and encouragement, as we lift up those among us who will spend the next 10 months learning, teaching, and investing in the lives of the youngest members of our community.
I hope that you will make an extra effort to be present on August 16 to offer up prayers and words of affirmation. We have invited teachers and students from around the community to come and hope to see many new faces in our midst. Please be there to offer true Broadway hospitality!
We intentionally planned for this Sunday to take place the Sunday after school (JCPS) starts to allow more time for students and teachers alike to invite others to come. We also hope this will tie-in well with the kickoff of our Fall schedule, as well as the Ministry Fair on August 23. As you greet new people, please be sure to invite them back for Wednesday night and the Ministry Fair.
Wednesday night “Adult Bible Study” will resume on August 19th around 6:00 p.m. in Friendship Hall. We’re planning a slightly different model for the fall to offer opportunities for learning, discussion and interaction. We will begin each night with our regular prayer time, followed by a brief talk/lecture on a specific topic (about 15 minutes). After the presentation there will be follow up questions. Everyone is invited to stay at their tables or move to a new table for the question time and stay as long as you’d like. Our hope is that table conversation will offer people the chance to hear different perspectives, learn from each other, and get to know one another better! We will try this model for several weeks. If there are specific topics related to faith that you would be interested in learning about, please contact Susan Reed at 502.895.2459 or susanr@broadwaybaptist.org.
Several children attended our Third Annual Creative Arts Camp this past month. We are grateful to all the volunteers who made this an awesome experience for our children.

When we think of what is implied in calling oneself a “Christian,” any of several associations may immediately come to mind, such as having your kids participate in Upward sports or eating Wednesday night dinner with others at your church. Whatever the resulting mental image may be for you, it’s likely that it will be one that is seen through a heavily tinted Western lens. But what does Christianity look like for those whose stories differ from ours? How can we broaden our understanding of how Christ works throughout the world, rather than just in the lives of those from the United States and other developed countries? And most importantly, what can we learn from Christians of other cultures?
These are not simple questions, of course, as they can each have numerous answers. Like any venture in faith, though, finding the complex answer begins with a single step in the direction of that pursuit. As a church, we now have a way to step forward in that direction through our new partnership with a congregation in Meknes, Morocco. This congregation is largely led by college/graduate students who represent heritages from a wide array of countries, such as Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and even Haiti. Many of them have given all their spare time and resources to keep this church alive while trying to study and provide for their families. In addition to those who are regular staples of the church, there are also many more faces who are just passing through that this church serves as well. These individuals are refugees who have traveled for hundreds of miles, often on foot, to attempt to cross the border into Spain in an effort to make better lives for their families. Although these travelers are in unstable and often dangerous situations, the congregation with which we are partnering acts as a place of rest and care when they need it most. They are living out the story of the Good Samaritan on a daily basis.
Our partnership is not a sponsorship. The church in Meknes was certainly thriving before our involvement and would likely remain that way even if we had never crossed paths. Our partnership with this congregation is an opportunity. It is an opportunity to step outside of our own worldviews to see Christ through the lives of others. It is a chance for us to learn from them, and them from us, sharing with each other our burdens and joys and everything in between. Most importantly, though, it is an opportunity for both our church and theirs to experience a sample of what it is like to be unified in worship with other believers across the globe. Our backgrounds, languages, and day-to-day circumstances may differ significantly, but we are united by the faith in a God who loves us all. If you would like to learn more about how to be involved in this partnership, please contact Kate Godwin at kateagodwin@gmail.com or Susan Reed at susanr@broadwaybaptist.org. Let’s see where God can lead us, together.

Dear Broadway Family,
Words cannot express the love we feel for all of you who journeyed with us for the past five years through Drew’s illness. Your encouraging words, cards, and support meant so much to him and our family. Thank you also to those who brought us food and sent flowers in the last few weeks. Thank you for all who participated in his service whether in the choir, playing an instrument, or just being there to comfort us. We thank Dr. Caldwell and Dr. Higdon for having the right words to help us begin to heal from losing our oldest son. We are so proud of Jonathan and Tim for being able to eulogize their brother, their best friend, with poise and dignity. They have grown up in a church that has always encouraged and nurtured their faith in God. We have a mighty hole in our hearts that might not ever heal, but we know we have a church family that will be there to help us along the way.
Sincerely,
Heidi and Frank
This time of year we reflect back on this nations birth 239 years ago and the military struggles we have been engaged in since in order to maintain our freedom.
Each of us have served or have family members who have served over the years. Betty's family began that military service in the Revolutionary war and the last was her young brother Mike in Iraq.
Today I want to address those Veterans we do not generally think of who have served this country over the past 239 years. . . . .
Over the week of June 21, 20 youth and chaperones from Broadway traveled to Greensboro College in Greensboro, NC, to participate in Passport Choices 2015. Throughout the week, our youth learned about what it means to Flip our perspective, Stand up for those who need our support, Speak the truth with grace and love, and Act out of a place of faith in God. In addition, our group spent approximately 240 hours learning how our giftedness can be used to serve God, through working in a community garden, learning how better to serve and lead in worship, learning how we were created for activity and play, or learning life skills to more effectively thrive out in the "real world" after high school. As always, the youth served as model examples of what it means to be a group that has fun together, respects and supports each other, and treats others with respect. We are grateful for everyone who helped support the trip through your prayers and funds. We are also thankful for Erin McCoy, John Dotson, Chris Caldwell, and Emily Holladay for chaperoning the trip.

Christmas might still be 6 months away, and folks won't gather around the Thanksgiving table for a while now, which makes it the perfect time for the annual youth trip to Holiday World! We will head to Holiday World on Tuesday, July 14. The cost will be $35 per student. In addition to their usual rides, they are opening up a new roller coaster this year that is the first of its kind in the world! To sign up, please pay your $35 to Chris Liles by Sunday, July 5. We will need chaperones as well!
