Vacation Bible School

June 12 - 16, 5 - 8 p.m.
Register now for Vacation Bible School. This year’s theme is Have you Herd? Through this Vacation Bible School, children and families will learn to listen for the voice of God, just as Christ said in John 10:27, “My sheep hear my voice, I know them and they follow me.”

Our Vacation Bible School is designed to incorporate Bible Study, Music, and Missions for children and adults, with a fellowship meal kicking off each night’s events. The event is open to children 3 years old and older, with nursery available for younger children. The cost is $20 per child, or $50 per family with three or more children participating.

Worship Care

Worship Care

When families come before the church to dedicate their lives to nurturing the spiritual development of their children, we as a church commit to partnering with them, introducing their children to the love of the God who created them. So far this year, we have spoken the covenantal words of the dedication litany four times, with even more to come!

As the number of children at Broadway continues to grow, our need for caring, nurturing individuals who take the words of the dedication litany to heart grows as well.

Worship Care volunteers are often the first people children meet when they come to Broadway. As such, they become one of the first examples of Christ’s love that children will encounter. Likewise, these volunteers share the love of Christ with Broadway’s families - old and new alike - by allowing them to worship God knowing that their children are cared for and loved.

Our parents are currently scheduled for six Sundays a year of Worship Care volunteering. When volunteers do not show up, parents end up being the first “on call,” simply due to the fact that they were dropping their children off in the nursery. Far too often, young couples in the church are not afforded the opportunity to worship together on Sunday mornings.

One of the most tangible ways that you can uphold the words spoken during the dedication litany is through volunteering in our Worship Care ministry. You can sign up for a particular number of Sundays (even one Sunday a year will make a huge impact to the Worship Care ministry), and choose your preference of age group (babies, toddlers, preschool, elementary). Descriptions for each role are available on the website.

Please consider helping with this vital ministry. Your investment impacts the lives of so many in our community.

If you are willing to serve in this ministry, please contact Emily Holladay at
emily@broadwaybaptist.org, or 502.895.2459, and let her know how many Sundays you are available to serve, and where you would most like to serve!

Discipleship/Parent Class Reflections

I am thankful for the opportunity to have joined in the “Sticky Faith” discussions with Susan Reed and several other parents of 3rd-5th grade children in the Discipleship Class led by Emily Holladay and Curtis Barman. In the parent group, we explored the reasons why we want to share our faith with our children. We learned from “Sticky Faith” research how we, as parents, are the biggest influence in whether or not our faith will “stick” with our children when they become adults. We discovered how we, as parents, can be more intentional in connecting our daily family life to our faith and in building stronger relationships with our children. We spoke of both the joys and frustrations of parenting, and we developed a greater sense of community with one another, sharing lots of laughs (and a few tears). I enjoyed the group and our discussions a great deal, and I have found myself being more intentional about certain things with Hayden and Isaac.

When I asked my boys about what they took away from their Discipleship class, they both said they had better understandings of what it means to be a Christian. They also loved learning about the symbolism and meaning of communion and the “behind the scenes” tours of the church when Pastor Chris showed the group the baptistries in the sanctuary and the chapel.

Again, I am thankful for the concerted effort to create this special, intensive learning opportunity for the children of Broadway and their parents, and I hope it is something we will continue in the future.

Parent/Child Dedications

Parent/Child Dedications

On Sunday, February 21, we will dedicate Lane Lester and her family to the community of Broadway Baptist, and on Sunday, March 13, we will dedicate Otto Williams and his family as well. These will be the sixth and seventh parent/child dedications I have participated in during my 18 months at Broadway, and will be two of many to take place in the coming months.

Dedication days are always so special to me, because they are a reminder of the potential blooming within our congregation. God continues to bless us with new life, and we shine brighter as a community because of these precious little ones among us.

Often, when we have baptisms, or when you go to a wedding, the presiding minister will ask the congregation to remember their own baptism or wedding. What commitments did you make at the time? How can remembering that day reinvigorate the commitment you continue to make today?

It’s difficult to ask people to remember their dedication day, considering that most people are less than a year old when they are dedicated! So it follows that the dedication is really less about the child’s commitment and more about the church and family’s commitment.

When we dedicate children, we commit to raising them in Godly homes, providing a nurturing Christian environment for the children both at home and at church. We also affirm that they are loved and included as a part of the congregation, and that we, as a church, will teach them the stories of their faith, so that they will come to know God through us.

The parent/child dedications are some of the most beautiful moments in worship, but they also require so much of us. We are blessed to worship and serve in a church that takes the words of the dedication litany seriously. My prayer is that we will continue to do so in the days, weeks, and years to come.

Music within Lent

Youth Choir
The youth choir will be singing one of their Jubilate Winter Retreat songs for us in worship, Child of God, on Sunday, February 7.

The Children’s Choir will be singing, Love, Christians, this is Your Song, on the first Sunday of Lent, February 14.  Therefore, parents, please encourage your children to attend the next few rehearsals on Wednesday evenings at 5:55 p.m. so they can participate in this special worship service.

Small Groups in Lent

Small Groups in Lent

This Lent, Pastor Emily and Mr. Curtis Barman will lead a Discipleship Class for 3rd-5th graders in the Children’s Sunday School Area. This class will focus on the Becoming Like Christ curriculum from the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, and will help children explore their faith and how they can make Christlike decisions now that they are getting older. Please pray for the students and leaders of this class as they seek to learn more about God over the coming weeks.

In conjunction with the 3rd-5th grade discipleship class, there will be a group for parents meeting from 5:15-6:45 in the Office Conference Room.  This will be a time of conversation about how parents’ spiritual habits can serve as a catalyst to help their children grow in faith. If you are interested in being a part of this group please contact Susan Reed at susanr@broadwaybaptist.org

A Look Back: Family Advent Breakfast

A Look Back: Family Advent Breakfast

Family Advent Breakfast

This past Christmas Season was a bit more magical with Zeke now old enough to realize that Santa would soon be visiting our home laden with presents. While “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” rang through the air daily during November and December, Matt and I knew that our priority was to refocus that excitement to that of Jesus Our Savior’s Birthday. This is quite a tall task considering every day in a four year old’s life is pretty much all about them (or at least our four year old!).  Thankfully, Emily Holladay and the Children’s Ministry put together a Family Advent Breakfast to begin the Holy Season.

After we fellowshipped and ate breakfast provided by Gracious Plenty, we were directed to three different stations.  The first was to create an advent box. Once finished, it contained an advent calendar with various symbols for each week to help celebrate. The second station was to make an angel to give to the Homebound members. The third was creating jars of hot cocoa and marshmallows to place in the food baskets that were delivered after the Christmas Musical. This was Zeke and Hank’s favorite station as they filled about 10 jars, of course all while eating a chocolate chip or two. Cathy Smith and Glenna Hess helped at this station and I loved seeing the interaction of the children with these two adults.

I was filled with gratitude for all the people that help make Broadway’s Children’s Program function. Having multiple hands to guide my three boys during these early stages matters. The children understood that both the angels and the hot chocolate were given to others that needed it more than them. This giving to others is what fulfills the Christmas Spirit and can only be understood with practice.

Weeks before Christmas, Zeke found the glow sticks that were part of the Advent box. They had been included in the box to remind us to shine the light of Christ wherever we went. Matt and I walked into a dark playroom to find the three boys adorned with the glow sticks made into bracelets. The kids were floating around singing “little gray donkey, clip-clop, clip-clop, on the way to Bethlehem.” At least for a moment, the excitement of Christ’s coming was realized and embraced.

Parent’s Night Out

Monday, December 21
5 - 8:30 p.m.
Children from birth through 5th grade are welcome to come to the Family Life Center on Monday, December 21, for a night of fun games, crafts, and a movie. This is a prime opportunity to get those last minute Christmas items purchased or to just take a breather before Christmas. Cost is $5 per child to offset the cost of childcare and materials.

Family Advent Breakfast

Family Advent Breakfast

On Sunday, December 6, during the Sunday School hour, we will have a Family Advent Breakfast in the Family Life Center. This event will be an opportunity for families and children to come together to do crafts and other projects to bring joy to others during Advent. The event will also help families learn how to practice Advent together by creating a box of devotionals that they can do at home throughout the rest of the month to prepare for Christ’s birth.

As we seek to reach out to younger populations in our community, this meal is a perfect time to invite friends that you know to be a part of the Broadway family and begin to live in the hope, peace, joy, and love that Christ invites us to experience anew each Advent season.

Children’s Sabbath

Children’s Sabbath

Sunday, October 18
11 a.m. Worship Service

On October 18, the children will lead us in worship for our annual Children’s Sabbath. The theme will be “Serving God by Serving Others”, and we will explore Matthew 25:35-40. The children have worked hard to embody the words of Jesus, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these, you did unto me.” You won’t want to miss this worship service. We have so much to learn from our children, and they are excited to share with you!
