Robert Gammon- Academy DIrector, vocal

Robert Gammon has over 35 years of experience in choral music, vocal performance, and children's music education.  He received his undergraduate Church Music/Vocal Performance degree at Stetson University and his Master’s degree in Church Music/Vocal Performance at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. In addition, he has over 30 years of extensive professional developmental studies in the areas of voice, children, youth and adult choirs and handbells. Since 2012, Robert has continued to build upon the strong tradition of choral music at Broadway Baptist Church. 

 

Robert Dixon- Bass

Robert Dixon is an orchestra director for Jefferson County Public Schools with experience teaching ages K-12.  He earned his Bachelors of Music Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and his Masters in Music with an emphasis in education from Morehead State University.  Robert Specializes in both classical and jazz Double Bass and his primary bass teachers include Dr. Jim Bates, Robert Docs, Steve Haines and Craig Brown. When he is not teaching, Robert enjoys performing around the Louisville area and spending time with his wife, Angela, and their two kids, Kelsey and Andrew.

 

Will French- Trumpet

William French is a trumpeter who is currently pursuing a Masters of Music degree from the University of Louisville.  He graduated from Morehead State University with a degree in Music Performance. He has performed with the Cave Run Symphony Orchestra, Kentucky Intercollegiate Band, Morehead State Symphonic Winds and Jazz I ensemble. Will competed at the National Trumpet Competition and was a recipient of the William Tolbert Whittenberg Scholarship for Performing Arts Excellence. 

 

Jennifer Harberson- Piano

Jennifer Harberson has an undergraduate degree from Shanghai Teachers University, with a major in Piano Performance and a minor in Pedagogy, and a Master’s Degree in Piano Performance from the University of Louisville. Jennifer has been the pianist at Broadway Baptist Church for 14 years where she has played for ensembles, choirs, and worship services.  Previously, she was the primary pianist for the Ballard High School Choral program. Jennifer has taught individual piano lessons for over 20 years in our community.

 

Marcia Hemingway- piano, beginning Organ

Marcia Hemingway holds a BA in Music from New Mexico State University and a Master of Church Music degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. She has served as substitute organist for numerous churches in Louisville and New Mexico, and as an organ teaching assistant at Southern Illinois University. Marcia has been teaching piano and organ for eighteen years, and was director/coordinator of the former Calvin Academy of Music.

 

Glenna Hess- preschool music, vocal

Glenna Hess holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree with concentrations in Music Education and Vocal Performance from Georgetown College, a Master of Music degree with concentrations in Music Education and Vocal Performance from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and an Education Specialist degree in school administration from the University of the Cumberlands. She has over 35 years experience in children’s music in both Jefferson County Public Schools and local church music programs. Glenna has also trained and inspired countless teachers on the importance of integrating music into the social, emotional and academic development of the whole child.

 

rhonda hibdon- piano

Rhonda Hibdon holds a BA in Music with an emphasis in Organ from Judson University in Elgin, IL. She has worked extensively in church music as a choir director for preschool, children, youth and adult choirs; has directed youth, adult and senior adult handbell choirs; and has served as organist, pianist and an accompanist for many ensembles including The Louisville Youth Choir. Rhonda is the K-6th grade general music teacher at the Highlands Latin School, where she also directs the 3rd-6th grade choir. She has been teaching private piano since 2005.

 

kathleen karr- flute

Kathleen Karr is the Principal Flutist of The Louisville Orchestra, a flutist with the NouLou Chamber Players and Flute Professor at The University of Louisville. In addition, Kathleen is an Altus Flutes Performing Artist. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from Northwestern University and her Master of Music degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Kathleen has performed master classes and recitals throughout the United States and in Israel and Mexico. In 2012, she was awarded the Distinguished Teaching Professor Award by the University of Louisville. 

 

Sarah Lambert- visual arts

Sarah Lambert is a mixed media artist with a background primarily in woodburning as well as pencil mediums. She started her business, MetamorForest, in 2017 as an independent artist, creating commissioned works and other nature inspired pieces. She has participated in several local and regional markets as well as juried art exhibitions. In 2020, she participated in an art auction supporting minority group organizations, and in 2022, she was awarded Honorable Mention in the Happy Little Trees: A Bob Ross Juried Exhibition. For more information, visit: instagram @metamorforestart

 

ken lundberg- guitar

Ken Lundberg studied jazz composition and improvisation at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. He has arranged music and performed with many band genres including jazz fusion, rock, country, and contemporary Christian. His 50-year career includes international tours with the Continental Singers and Orchestra, recording sessions with Bill Gaither’s recording studio and as the lead guitarist for Northeast Christian Church in Louisville, Kentucky. Ken is recognized as both a guitarist and a teacher. 

 

Clara Markham- Viola

Clara Markham is a native of Charleston, West Virginia. She began studying the violin in her youth, performing with the Charleston Symphony while in high school. She switched to viola in college while attending Ohio University where she achieved her BFA. After graduation, she continued her studies with several renowned violists while performing in the Louisville Orchestra and teaching part-time in the Jefferson County Public Schools strings program. She has extensive orchestral and private teaching experience including certification in all ten books of the Suzuki Method of teaching. She lives in Irish Hill where she enjoys her hobby of American Kennel Club Dog Obedience competition with her two Champion Basset Hounds, Mata Hari and Juniper.

 

Allison Olsen- Cello

Allison Olsen received her Bachelor of Music Performance degree from Rice University, her Master’s degree in Music Performance from the University of Akron, and continued her studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music in the Professional Studies Program. Ms. Olsen joined the faculty of Bellarmine University as Violoncello Professor in 2011, and has also taught at Indiana University Southeast, the University of Akron Musical Arts Program and Cleveland Public Schools. She was formerly the Principal Cellist of Akron Symphony, Owensboro Symphony and a member of the Marini String Quartet. Allison joined the cello section of the Louisville Orchestra in 2006. She has performed and toured internationally in Europe, the Middle East and Russia. She currently spends her summers as the Principal Cellist of the Lakeside Chautauqua Orchestra in Ohio.

 

Makara Sernett- visual arts

Makara Sernett is a painter with a background in a variety of mediums and subject matter as a result of her many years of experimentation. As a showing fine artist, she predominantly produces collections of landscapes and florals using acrylics, oils and watercolor. Makara is actively exhibiting and has shown in multiple states.

sarah sparks- visual arts

Sarah Sparks holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Education from Western Kentucky University and her Masters degree in Art Education from the University of Florida, where her focus was arts integration. She has 13 years experience teaching in the classroom in a high school setting and is K-12 certified. Sarah was honored as Kentucky High School Art Educator of the Year (KyAEA award) in 2009 and has also received recognition through Scholastic Art and Writing awards and the U.S. Presidential Scholars program. 

 

nina surbaugh- ballroom dancing

Nina Surbaugh has been ballroom dancing for over 20 years, with 18 years experience in  competition. She has taken lessons from various dancing professionals; including some who have featured on Dancing With the Stars! She is experienced in both American and Standard dancing styles. Her teaching philosophy is that anyone can benefit from the life skills that dancing provides. She accepts students of all skill levels; from amateur to experienced. kim tichenor- violin

Kimberly Tichenor attended the Juilliard School and Indiana University. She was also a member of the Children’s Orchestra Society where she was able to serve as Concertmaster and soloist on its tour to the Philippines and Taiwan. Kim has performed at music festivals throughout the United States including Meadowmount School of Music and the Kent-Blossom Music Festival. She has held the Assistant Principal second violin position with the Louisville Orchestra since 2010.

 

Parker Van Houten- vocal

Parker Van Houten, bass-baritone, graduated from the University of Kentucky in May of 2023 with two Bachelor’s degrees in Music Performance and Arts Administration. A multi-instrumentalist and composer with over 70 works ranging from choral to solo voice to instrumental, Parker has had his works performed in three continents. When not on stage, Parker offers voice lessons and serves as rehearsal accompanist and teaching assistant at the Youth Performing Arts School in Louisville. With previous teaching experience in classical, musical theatre and contemporary, Parker looks forward to the opportunity to empower young musicians through Broadway Arts Academy.

Karen Welsh- piano, vocal

Karen Welsh has performed and taught music for over 40 years. Attending the University of Louisville School of Music, she was awarded a Bachelor in Piano Pedagogy with emphasis on Vocal Performance. Karen’s career has included piano accompaniment, teaching private piano

and voice lessons and directing choirs at both middle and high school levels. She was the Choir Director for 22 Years at Kentucky Country Day School in Louisville, KY where her students were highly recognized for competitions in state, regional and national honor choirs. For personal enjoyment Karen has been involved in musical theater, performing in numerous local plays. She particularly enjoyed serving as musical director and teaching high school students the art of musical theater.

 

maddie west- visual arts

Maddie West is a music teacher and artist with experience teaching ages K-12 with Jefferson County Public Schools. She received her Bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Louisville. As an artist, Maddie specializes in watercolor painting but also has experience in acrylic and oil painting, as well as charcoal and pencil drawing mediums. She has taught watercolor classes to all ages at Broadway and uses her background in education to inform her teaching style. Her work has been displayed throughout Louisville in coffee shops, art fairs, and markets.

 

ashley wilson- piano

Ashley Wilson holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano and Music Education from the University of Georgia. Ashley has served as accompanist and director with the Louisville Youth Choir. She was also accompanist for the Ballard High School Choral program, Christian Academy of Louisville Choral program and several other area schools and special choral events. She is a staff accompanist at Boyce College and at Southern Theological Baptist Seminary. Ashley has experience in elementary education, high school choral programs, and has taught private piano lessons for 18 years at the Calvin Presbyterian Academy of Music.


New faculty will be added as the Academy develops and grows throughout the year.
