A pledge is a promise. In a world full of uncertainty, changed plans, and fractured relationships, a pledge offers us an opportunity to reorient, rededicate, and refresh our commitments to God and each other. Our promises offer a true north to return to when the winds and weather of life’s storms seem to toss us to and fro. Just like a vow made to a spouse or a commitment made to a beloved friend, our financial commitments renew the connective tissue knitting us to our beloved communities of belonging.

Our finances are serious business. Money is discussed in Scripture over 800 times, and Jesus warned his disciples in Luke 12:15, “Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.” The antidote for greed is generosity.

Giving alone is a good, essential, spontaneous expression of generosity, while pledging frees us. to lean into the commitments we have already made. Just like a promise made to a loved one, our actions backfill our words to create healthy, flourishing relationships; as does our investment in the mission and ministry of Broadway Baptist Church.
