Kendrick Wells introduced me to the theologian, Paul Tillich, who we read often in the SALT Sunday school class, and he has one of my favorite quotes on stewardship: “Religion is first, an open hand to receive a gift, and second, an active hand to distribute gifts.”
When I discovered – and later joined – Broadway in 2009, I felt like I had been given a gift. I was wading through my mid-20’s in a new city that I loved, but hadn’t quite found my place in yet. I hadn’t been active in a church for several years, but felt strongly that I needed to find a local spiritual community.
When I visited Broadway, I was drawn to the traditional worship style – the sanctuary is stunning, the music was beautiful, the message was meaningful. This is something that had been missing in my life. But once I got past the first impression, I not only saw a traditional church, I saw a progressive one. For the first time, I saw women in leadership positions, youth who led worship, members who actively engaged in all parts of their community, and a consistently hopeful message. The tradition brought me in the door, but the progressive values and the focus on the future is what kept me here.
Broadway has been so generous to me. It helped me lay roots in this city I now call home, and I was blessed to be married in this sanctuary last year. So you’re probably stuck with me for a while now! I’m proud to be a member of Broadway, and it’s a great feeling to give back to this community. Whether you give of your time, your prayers, or financially, I encourage to do so actively and generously.
