God of Wilderness and Water
Our Lenten theme at Broadway this year is God of Wilderness and Water. The artwork on the front cover of the newsletter and worship folders is an artistic interpretation of our theme. In addition, other creative elements are located throughout the Sanctuary to enhance our journey:
· The Cross - representing Christ’s sacrifices
· Burlap - representing the desert
· Water Basins - representing life
· The color purple - representing our need for forgiveness
The season of Lent is 40 days in length, not including Sundays (Sundays are days of celebration in the Christian church, and thus are not counted). Lent is a time when we prepare for Easter by observing a period of confession, forgiveness, and spiritual discipline.
*Special thanks to our resident artist Claudia Wells for her inspiring artwork created exclusively for the journey of Lent.
Lenten Prayer
The following prayer, based on a prayer from Vanderbilt Divinity School, will guide our Lenten worship and meditation this season.
“God of wilderness and water, your Son was baptized and tempted as we are. Guide us through this season, that we many not avoid struggle, but open ourselves to blessing, through the cleansing depths of repentance and the heaven-rending words of the Spirit. Amen.
