Small Groups at Broadway
...building relationships with God, building relationships with one another
Small groups at Broadway involve up to twelve persons in learning, living, and
proclaiming Christ’s message of grace, hope and love.
Five Essential Elements of Every Small Group
- Give Meaning
Each small group has a central purpose which takes many shapes depending on the focus of the group.
The central purpose of a group adds meaning to the life of the group and its participants.
- Foster Community
Small groups create a place for each participant to feel a sense of belonging. We know God better as
we know one another better.
- Respect for Others
We give and receive Christ’s message of grace, hope, and love with others in small groups.
- Spiritual Direction
Small groups provide spiritual direction and nurture through prayer, Bible study and worship.
- Promote Growth Inward and Outward
Small groups sustain us as individuals and as God’s people for growth in our souls and in God’s
Kingdom.
Four Focuses of Small Groups
- Structured Groups
These groups provide a clear and concise program of study, learning, and personal
growth through the use of book studies, Bible study curriculum, and life enrichment
programs. They typically meet for a specified amount of time with a highly structured
outline of the content and participant expectations.
- Community Groups
We are charged in the New Testament to bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2);
confess our faults to one another (James 5:16); receive wisdom (Ephesians 1:17); and to
administer God’s grace, hope and love (I Peter 4:10, Ephesians 4:16). These groups are
focused on leading participants to accomplish these tasks in a growing confidential and
safe atmosphere. Groups may form for this purpose intentionally or evolve from one of
the other focuses of small groups.
- Connecting Groups
Every group needs an entry point and these groups serve that purpose. From a ‘New
Members’ Class’ to opportunities for growing in leadership this a place for exploring
Broadway and for exploring small groups.
- Servant Leadership Groups
Sharing our Spiritual Gifts and our faith stories are other components
of our charge as Christians. These groups are opportunities for
members and guests alike to share their talents, gifts, and abilities
to connect with others and with God. This includes discovering
and living into our spiritual giftedness and passion.

"On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there.
One of those listening was a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message.
When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. 'If you consider me a believer in the Lord,' she said, 'come and stay at my house.' And she persuaded us"
